About The Founder
Dysheka Sanders is the founder of Jacobs Ladder Inc Family Services. Before diving into the field of family services, I was a single mom of 4 children. My parenting began at age 19 when I gave birth to my oldest son. With little knowledge about parenting and education limited to high school, my parenting reflected the parenting I grew accustomed to as a child. As my children grew and I was faced with challenges, especially those in education, I grew a passion for advocating for children. I began my fight in Sauk Village, Illinois where children of color were receiving disciplinary marks on a higher level than their counterpart. I gained the attention of the Homeless Coalition, NAACP, Star Tribune Reporter for the unlawful practices within the school district.
In 2004, I moved to Bloomington, MN to allow my children a fair chance of being educated. During my two years in Bloomington, I experienced challenges within the middle school that showed the school system not being equipped to engage, encourage, support children of color. Again, finding myself advocating for my children to be respected and educated, I noticed a pattern.
In 2007, I began working on Jacobs Ladder Inc, a youth mentoring program to support and bridge all children regardless of race. While working on Jacobs Ladder Inc, I wrote a play called, “You Called Me” focused to encourage children to stay positive while faced with traumatic situations. I worked to have the play presented at church events. The program also focused on homework tutoring as well as collaborating with other programs for youth. One particularly, P.A.A.L. The program completed dinner fundraisers to help a family gain resources to pay their rent.
With a desire to give families more parenting information than she had, in 2008 I decided to return to school for business management. I went to Minneapolis Community College where I earned two applied science degrees in Early Education and Education. In 2011 I attended Augsburg College to continue my education in Secondary Education. I completed my education at Metro State College.
In 2016 I began working for Families in Transition Services, FiTS as a visitation supervisor and parenting coach. During my 6 years of providing supervised visitation and parenting coaching; I was able to put together a 9 chapter parenting curriculum to build on family strengths and weakness in parenting. Reflecting on parents like myself, who utilized parenting strategies from generation to generation that damaged the parent/child relationship, the curriculum was developed focusing on building a healthy relationship, instead. My mission became not just coaching and providing in the moment training, but life changing strategies to bridge closeness between parent and child; as well as close the revolving door to Child Protection.
